History of Scaffolding

Scaffolding has been around far longer than many realise. Evidence from cave paintings over 17,000 years ago suggests our ancestors used simple platforms to reach high places. The Egyptians built pyramids with wooden scaffolds, while the Greeks and Romans refined the idea with more stable timber and pulley systems.

During the Middle Ages, scaffolding enabled the construction of cathedrals and castles, though safety was still minimal. The Industrial Revolution changed everything — timber gave way to iron and steel, and standardised parts made scaffolds stronger and easier to build. By the 20th century, safety features like guardrails and secure platforms became essential.

From wooden poles to modern modular systems, scaffolding has always been about one thing — giving people the support they need to build safely and reach new heights.

Today's scaffolding is lightweight, modular, and designed with safety first. At TradeTechs, we're proud to train the next generation of scaffolders in these modern methods — combining centuries of history with today's best practice.
